Welcome to My Dancing Dog
Canine musical freestyle and canine dressage are the main topics of this site. There are different requirements for each depending on what club you are affiliated with. The names of freestyle and dressage may be different as well. Below are the definitions used by the Paws 2 Dance Club in British Columbia, Canada. Musical freestyle This is an exciting new sport where a dog and handler have fun bonding, while dancing to a choreographed piece of music. Handler costumes, and dance steps (or at least stepping in time to the music) are encouraged. Dogs may wear fancy collars and leg bands. The choreography is not structured with mandatory moves but is open to creative imagination by the team. Canine dressage This is different from canine musical freestyle in that the main focus is on heeling. Tricks may be included but they will primarily to be used for transition purposes with 90% of the routine done in heeling positions. Unlike freestyle, a required set of moves is mandatory for each division. Precise heeling and good use of the music tempo to make the routine interesting will be the key to a well executed routine. Dressage is ideal for those obedience people that want to have more fun with their dogs. It is also a good step to take if you are not quite ready to jump into freestyle. |
